PAN verification answers one narrow question well: does this permanent account number exist and does the holder name match what you were told? It does not prove the person in front of you is the holder. Used with that boundary in mind, it is one of the strongest low-friction KYC checks available in India.

Read the format first

PositionCharactersMeaning
1-3LettersAlphabetic series.
4LetterHolder type — P for individual, C for company, H for HUF, F for firm.
5LetterFirst letter of the surname or entity name.
6-9DigitsSequential number.
10LetterCheck character.

A PAN claiming to belong to an individual named Sharma but carrying a fourth character of C is inconsistent before you run any lookup at all.

Verification workflow

  1. Sanity-check the 10-character format and the holder-type letter.
  2. Run the PAN module to confirm existence and the registered name.
  3. Compare the returned name to the bank account, invoice or agreement in front of you.
  4. For a business, confirm the entity type letter matches the legal form they claim.
  5. Record the lookup timestamp in your onboarding file.
A valid PAN proves the number exists, not that the person presenting it owns it. Pair it with a live document check for anything high value.

FAQ

How do I check if a PAN card is real or fake?

Validate the 10-character structure, then verify the number against records. If the number does not resolve or the name does not match, treat the document as unverified.

What does the fourth letter of a PAN mean?

It encodes holder type: P for individual, C for company, H for Hindu Undivided Family, F for firm, T for trust, and so on.

Can two people have the same PAN?

No. PAN is unique per holder. Duplicates are an error to be reported to the issuing authority.

Is PAN verification enough for KYC?

It is a strong signal but not sufficient alone. Combine it with a bank or UPI name match and a document liveness check.
