How to Investigate a UPI Scam Step by Step

Build an evidence file after a UPI fraud: verify the VPA, trace the contact number, and file a report that gets actioned.

UPI fraud reports succeed or fail on evidence quality. A report that names a verified beneficiary, a timestamped transaction reference and a traced contact number gets actioned far faster than one that says money was taken. Here is how to assemble that file.

Act in the first 24 hours

  1. Screenshot the full chat, the payment request and the transaction confirmation with UTR.
  2. Run the UPI module on the beneficiary VPA to resolve the registered name.
  3. Run the Mobile module on every number the fraudster used.
  4. Run the Telegram or Email module on any handle or address they gave you.
  5. Call your bank's fraud line and quote the UTR — early flags can freeze funds still in transit.
  6. File on the national cybercrime portal and at your local station, attaching everything above.

What each check contributes

CheckEvidence it adds
UPI VPAThe name the receiving account is registered under.
MobileOperator and circle, plus any linked records.
Telegram / EmailHandle age and associated identifiers.
Lookup historyA timestamped, exportable record of when you ran each check.

Structure the report

  • Timeline of events with exact timestamps.
  • Amount, UTR and beneficiary VPA.
  • Verified beneficiary name from your UPI lookup.
  • All contact identifiers used by the fraudster and what each lookup returned.
  • Screenshots as attachments, referenced from the timeline.
Do not contact or confront the fraudster after filing. It destroys evidence value and can put you at personal risk.

FAQ

Can I get my money back after a UPI scam?

Recovery depends on how fast the receiving account is frozen. Reporting within hours, with the UTR, gives the best chance.

Does a UPI lookup show the fraudster's bank account number?

No. It resolves the registered name behind the VPA, which is what investigators need to link the payment to a person.

Should I run these checks before paying a stranger?

Yes. A pre-payment UPI name check costs one credit and catches the most common marketplace scam: a VPA registered to a completely different name than the seller claims.
