Most scam calls in India fail one of three tests: the number does not match the institution it claims to represent, the story requires urgency, or the ask involves an OTP, an app install or a payment to 'verify' something. Screening takes minutes and costs nothing compared with the loss.
Instant red flags
- Anyone asking for an OTP. No bank, no operator, no government body ever needs it.
- A request to install AnyDesk, TeamViewer, QuickSupport or any APK sent over WhatsApp.
- A small 'verification' payment promised to be refunded.
- Threats of arrest, parcel seizure or SIM disconnection within hours.
- A personal UPI handle given for what is supposedly a company payment.
The screening routine
- Hang up. Never continue a suspicious call — call the institution back on the number printed on your card or its official site.
- Run the Mobile module on the caller number to get operator and circle.
- Compare the circle against the branch or office the caller claims to be from.
- If money or a payment link was involved, run the UPI module on the VPA before doing anything else.
- If a document was quoted at you, verify it independently rather than confirming details back to the caller.
If you already paid or shared an OTP
- Call the national cyber-fraud helpline 1930 immediately — the first hours decide whether funds can be frozen.
- File a complaint on the national cybercrime portal with the number, VPA, amount and timestamps.
- Notify your bank in writing and ask for a transaction dispute reference.
- Export your lookup history entries for the number and VPA as supporting evidence.
FAQ
How do I know if a call is from a real bank?
You do not verify it on the incoming call. Hang up and dial the number printed on your card or the bank's official website.
Are calls from +92 or unusual international codes always scams?
Not always, but an unsolicited international call claiming to be an Indian bank, courier or government office effectively always is.
What number do I call to report cyber fraud in India?
1930 is the national cyber-fraud helpline. Follow it with a written complaint on the national cybercrime portal.
Can a lookup tell me the caller's name?
Sometimes a name appears where it exists in accessible records, but treat operator, circle and payment-handle checks as the reliable signals.
