Every Indian vehicle registration begins with a state code followed by a two-digit RTO number. The prefix UP32 is assigned to the Lucknow Regional Transport Office in Uttar Pradesh. Any vehicle whose number plate starts with UP32 was originally registered here.
A typical UP32 plate looks like UP32 AB 1234 — the first four characters (UP32) identify the RTO, the two letters are the series, and the last four digits are the unique vehicle number.
