Every Indian vehicle registration begins with a state code followed by a two-digit RTO number. The prefix TN20 is assigned to the Coimbatore Regional Transport Office in Tamil Nadu. Any vehicle whose number plate starts with TN20 was originally registered here.
A typical TN20 plate looks like TN20 AB 1234 — the first four characters (TN20) identify the RTO, the two letters are the series, and the last four digits are the unique vehicle number.
